DFS 102 Safety and Preservation of Life and Property

Gain an understanding of the essential safety principles that guide builders and inspectors in protecting occupants, buildings, and property. Students explore how codes support safe design, construction, inspection, occupancy, and ongoing maintenance—helping ensure structures remain safe, compliant, and life-preserving throughout their entire service life.

DFS 103 Property Maintenance

This course equips students to understand the importance of keeping buildings and property safe, sanitary, code-compliant, and properly maintained within their jurisdiction. Students explore ongoing maintenance practices that reduce the effects of age, weather, and deterioration while preventing rodent and vermin infestation, preserving property value, and protecting occupants and communities.

DFS 104 Blueprints and Architectural Design

This course introduces students to blueprint reading, architectural design, design engineering, and site preparation principles for effective planning and construction. Students also explore the transfer of load and how structural forces influence safe, efficient building design from concept through execution.

DFS 105  Construction Math & Electrical Inspections and Code

Gain an understanding of the math and calculations required for construction and inspections. Start from zero and become proficient in electrical safety! We walk students through residential, commercial and industrial electrical codes so you evaluate real wiring with confidence. Understand the concepts of electrical supply and distribution. Learn to protect people from electrical/fire hazards as you gain expertise fast!

DFS 106 Codes Standards and Zoning 

This course introduces students to essential building, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, zoning, swimming pool, and spa codes and standards. Students also explore the roles of engineers, developers, construction workers, inspectors, and plan checkers in ensuring safe, compliant, and properly approved construction within each jurisdiction.

DFS 107 Site Preparation to Roof

This course provides students with a working knowledge of the systematic building process from site preparation through structure completion. Students explore how various trades integrate from planning, permitting, construction, and inspection to final approval and issuance of a certificate of occupancy, ensuring safe, compliant, and successful project completion.

DFS 108 Materials & Inspections

Understand the approved materials needed in Type V and commercial construction. Define the use of architectural materials, including lumber framing, roofing, and wall and exterior finishes. Understand the proper use of hardware for footings, framing, flooring, stairs, and roof applications. Determine the proper applications of windows and doors related to the architectural plans, codes, and details.

DFS 110 Principles of Plumbing, Heating & Refrigeration Inspections

Dive in and learn drain, waste and venting systems of plumbing through illustrated examples and instruction tailored to new learners! Review the codes and standards relevant to residential and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems. We walk you through code standards, classifications and everything to launch your plumbing or HVAC inspection career with valuable skills!

DFS 111 Basics of Municipal Emergency Preparedness/Management

Understand your duties in municipal emergency preparedness and response. Learn the plans, procedures, and capabilities local governments have in place to respond to natural or man-made disasters and emergencies. Identify hazards and potential threats, understand emergency operations plans, first responder training, early warning systems, and evacuation plans. Learn importance of stockpiling supplies, and how to coordinate with state and federal agencies.

DFS 112 Fire Life Safety

Equips students to understand basic fire safety requirements, firefighters’ roles, and the importance of inspectors’ approval of code-compliant structural supports and connections. Students examine how compromised buildings endanger fire personnel, along with ingress/egress requirements, smoke detectors, fire doors, fire-rated construction, sprinklers, standpipes, brush clearances, and related protections.
